Keywords and SEO

Guest Post by Eric Knoepfler

In SEO, keywords are king.  I would normally say that they’re key, but seeing as how that would be a little redundant, let’s stick to king.  It’s a little more fitting, too, seeing as how they’re one of the backbones upon which search engine optimization rests.

The process of SEO involves revamping a website’s relevance to certain keywords and phrases people use Google and other search engines to search for.  Keywords also play a big part in connected sites linking back to your site, thus increasing your overall traffic and rankings within the search engine.

The first step to implementing successful SEO is choosing the right keywords.  Keywords, like we’ve discussed, are what the search engines use to find you.  If yours don’t match up with theirs, hardly anyone will ever find you.  The goal here is to optimize your site for the right keywords.  For example, if you’re running a business specializing in providing horse riding and stable rentals, chances are most people aren’t searching for “equestrian enjoyment operations,” or something of the like.

Most likely, people will be searching for “horse riding” in whatever location they’re in.  Another thing to watch out for is being too broad.  Don’t optimize for the keyword “horse,” or else you’ll risk coming in behind a horse and buggy company.  One problem, though — you can never be sure.  Another vital part about implementing keyword SEO tactics is to research, research, research.  Using Google’s keyword tracking tool, you can do the research that tells you what people locally, or nationally, are searching for in your area of expertise.

One can also employ smaller tactics to improve their use of keywords both on their own pages, and through SEO style guest blogging.  Using the same keyword in the title as in the body text improves its value.  The closer a keyword is to the top of the article, the stronger it stands with Google.  Using the right keywords for guest blogs is also essential.  You’ll want to make sure to use the right keywords for the right audiences and blogs.  If you stretch it too far, the blog owner may not even let you post at all.

If, while you are guest blogging, you use the keywords as do-follow links back to the site you’re promoting, they basically double in value.  This is usually the end goal in SEO.  By using all the tips about keywords discussed above, you’ll surely become proficient at using keywords in your SEO strategies.
